Little Heroes Show Courage During Promotion

LA Boxing Baton Rouge
February 6, 2012

brazilian jiu jitsu, jujitsu, karate for kids, martial arts classes for kidsSaturday February 4th marked the inaugural Little Heroes Belt Ceremony. This special event is held only once every 3 months to honor and promote those in our Kid’s Jiu Jitsu Program who have shown great improvements in technique and understanding of the art. All kids in the program, regardless of athletic ability, are given one-on-one attention and instruction on execution of takedowns, sweeps, joint locks, choke holds, and escapes. Our Instructors, Coach Kevin and Coach Jessica, maintain a safe, exciting atmosphere that keep children engaged, focused, and ready to learn more.

The event began with LA Boxing Owner and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Purple Belt, Gabe Miller, as he welcomed the entire team to the ceremony and thanked all parents in attendance. He spoke directly to the children as he explained the importance of not only learning and improving their skills physically but also improving themselves mentally and emotionally. “We want to see all of you get better with your defensive guard and offensive submissions, but more importantly we want to see all of you become better people,” Miller communicated. “The things you are learning in this school are not meant to hurt. They’re meant to help. By wearing that belt around your waist you are carrying the responsibility of being respectful to your parents, kind to your classmates, focused during school, and compassionate to your teammates.

Coach Kevin Bellard then instructed promotees, Joshua Lira (9) and McKennah Bellard (10), through a series of warm-up drills and technique sequences. Before an audience of parents, teammates, and the adult BJJ Revolution Team, each student was required to demonstrate the technique called out while coaches Jessica Guedry (White Belt), Josh Mancuso (Brown Belt), and Andrew Sall (Black Belt and Head Coach) critiqued each maneuver. From sambo leg sweeps to inverted arm-bars, both Joshua and McKennah put on an amazing display of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu they’ve learned over the past 6 months. “Man, I’m just really impressed by everything they know,” remarked Scott Casternapolous, an accomplished Blue Belt and multi-tournament champion. “It’s as if they’ve soaked in every detail! I can’t imagine where they’re going to be in a few years. These kids are really going to be special.

Saturday was also a special day, personally, for Coach Kevin Bellard. He got a bit choked up while awarding his daughter, McKennah, to her next belt. “It really meant a lot to me,” expressed Kevin. “Not every day does a father get the opportunity to promote his daughter in Jiu Jitsu.” Joshua Lira was officially promoted to Yellow/White while McKennah received her Orange/White Belt. The ceremony was a great success with lots of promise for a growing kid’s program. The next Belting Ceremony will be announced in the next few weeks. The Little Heroes Program is now accepting new students. Every child interested in getting started with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, between ages 7-12, is given 1 Free Month of classes at LA Boxing Baton Rouge. They are confident children will grow stronger as individuals both physically and mentally through this great program.
